2021 NCDOT Western Division On Call
Project Description:
Carolina TEA has been assigned various design, design review and value management tasks from the Western Divisions. These assignments include:
Design of rural bridge and culvert replacements (2 structures)
Design Review of bridge and culvert replacements (25+ structures)
Design review of grade separation bridges converted to precast concrete tunnels under I-40 (2 locations)
Value Assessment (VA) of a 3.5-mile corridor improvement including a new round-a-bout intersection,
4 additional intersection improvements, multiple box culvert replacements, numerous driveways and bridges over Williamson Creek and the French Broad River. Project elevated the roadway above the 50-yr HWEL, while maintaining traffic in both directions.
Design of a round-a-bout at Raccoon Road intersection in Haywood County
Independent cost proposals for comparison of design fees and/or construction costs.
NCDOT has been very complementary of the design reviews performed by Carolina TEA noting our focus on constructability, maintaining positive drainage throughout construction and minimizing impacts to the environment, utilities, ROW and the travelling public. They noted that all comments by Carolina TEA have been accepted by the original designers, resulting in changes to the plans. Some comments completely revised the staging of the project, the MOT plans, and even the type of structure being designed for a particular setting – as the original design was not constructible.
